Our Story
David's coffee roasting journey began in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. The world had seemingly come to a standstill, and like many others, he found himself at home, searching for ways to fill the quiet hours. One day, while browsing Reddit, he stumbled upon a post that piqued his curiosity: it claimed that you could roast your own coffee beans at home with nothing more than a popcorn popper. Intrigued and in slight disbelief, David decided to give it a try.
He ordered a small bag of green coffee beans and dusted off the old popcorn popper from the back of his kitchen cabinet. When the beans arrived, David set up his “roasting station” on his back patio and followed the instructions he had read online. With a sense of excitement and uncertainty, he plugged it in and watched as the beans slowly turned from pale green to golden brown, filling his backyard with the rich aroma of freshly roasted coffee. When David brewed his first cup from those beans, the results amazed him. The flavor was vibrant and complex, far better than anything he’d bought at the store. That small experiment was the beginning of a newfound passion.
Soon, roasting coffee on the popcorn popper wasn’t enough. Eager to learn more and gain control over the roasting process, David upgraded to a 1/2-pound roaster. He spent hours refining his craft, experimenting with different beans and roast profiles to discover how each subtle adjustment affected the flavor. He even began digitally logging every roast profile through specialized roasting software, determined to track every nuance and learn from each batch.
As his confidence grew, David started sharing his roasted coffee with friends and family. Their excitement matched his own, and he began thinking about turning his hobby into something more. But he quickly ran into a challenge—roasting just a few pounds on his small machine took far too much time. It became clear that if he wanted to sell coffee, he would need a bigger roaster.
A couple years later, David went on a missions trip to Nicaragua, where he had the chance to visit a local coffee farm. The experience was eye-opening. He met the farmers, saw firsthand the effort that went into growing the beans, and gained a deeper appreciation for the entire coffee process. The trip moved him deeply, and when he returned home, he felt a strong sense that God was leading him toward something bigger—perhaps even starting a coffee roasting business.
Still unsure how it would all come together, David prayed and waited, not knowing exactly how to act on it. But then, an unexpected opportunity presented itself. He learned about roaster that was up for sale, a machine that could handle much larger batches, but still small enough for a “small batch” paradigm. It was a leap, but he knew this was the next step.
With a vision to not only roast exceptional coffee but also give back, David decided to start a company—New Beginnings Coffee. His dream was to create a business that would support charitable organizations and make a difference in the world, all while offering high-quality, responsibly sourced coffee. As the roaster began turning out larger batches and orders from friends and family started pouring in, David realized that his new journey was just beginning. New Beginnings Coffee was born, and with it, the mission to use coffee as a force for good, and for God’s glory.
