Grown in the highlands of Aceh Tengah, this organic Sumatra coffee is the result of the careful stewardship of producers Wagiman and Yasmin, who farm at elevations around 1,450 meters above sea level. Certified Fairtrade Organic, their farms rely solely on natural fertilizers like coffee husks and cow manure, ensuring both environmental sustainability and soil longevity. This mindful approach to cultivation—combined with the region’s tropical biodiversity and microclimates—creates the foundation for a truly distinctive cup.
The beans come primarily from Gayo 1 and Gayo 2 varietals, which are widely grown by ethnic Gayo farmers across the highlands. Though their lineage is not well documented, Gayo 1 is thought to stem from the Timor variety, while Gayo 2 shares traits with both Timor and Bourbon. These varieties are known for producing a lighter body compared to the heavier Mandheling coffees of eastern Sumatra, and this lot brings forth gentle complexity with rich earthiness, subtle fruit notes, and a smooth finish.
Contributing to its unique character is the traditional wet-hulled (Giling Basah) processing method, a hallmark of Indonesian coffee. This approach allows for quicker drying in the region’s humid climate and yields a rustic, full-flavored profile prized by coffee lovers worldwide. With centuries of coffee history dating back to the Dutch colonial era and a patchwork of small farms across remote landscapes, Sumatra continues to offer a bold, time-honored experience in every cup.
